About this deal

There lays the beauty of Control Unleashed, a book whose simple wisdom I will be striving to employ in my training for quite sometime. Leslie McDevitt’s versatile Control Unleashed program is designed to help “dogs with issues” learn how to relax, focus, and work off-leash reliably in either stimulating or stressful situations. My problem with the book was that in the middle of a discussion on training methods and terms used in the discussion, the book referrers to future chapters for a detailed discussion of the method and/or terms. Leslie has served in many capacities (including president and obedience training director ) at Y2K9’s Dog Sports Club. Haven't finished reading yet, but implementing what I have learned, we almost manage passing other dogs without barking.

Rather than being bound to a world where people are taught to think of training as nothing more than cue-and-response, the Control Unleashed® program boldly takes us even further into the realm of conversational training—a style of interaction where both the handler and dog can cue each other to perform a behavior and give feedback, and where the dog takes the driver's seat and directs his counterconditioning process. However, what makes her approach unique and valuable to me is that she prescribes a novel combination of ways to do this and one that can be adapted to individuals.I have long wondered if this is necessary or even desirable but dared not question such a bedrock principle in training, especially without being able to propose an alternative. She uses many of the principles professional dog trainers are all familiar with in CU: Learning to read your dog’s signs of stress; Conditioning a relaxation response so the dog can think; Working with dogs prior to reaching a threshold of arousal; Finding the point at which each dog can work and learn; Reframing the picture so the dog sees what has been anxiety provoking as safe; and Using the Premack Principle to create attention and focus on the owner. Since 2007, when Control Unleashed: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog was first published, the science—and the art—of Control Unleashed® has been guiding handlers all over the world as they help their "dogs with issues" learn how to relax, focus, and work off-leash reliably in stimulating or stressful situations. I love this book so much, it's changing how I relate to my dogs and I think it's going to overall improve their wellbeing so much.

I especially like her methods of reducing anxiety and conditioning a relaxed response in a dog, thereby changing their internal state and response to stimulus. So I would probably have bought this book when it first came out if I'd read the whole summary and stuff. McDevitt then moves on detail why sniffing is not a crime, as well as how to teach the dog to think through his arousal using the Off Switch game. If the answer is no, your dog is not wrong about anything; he is just giving you feedback, so you know if he is in the right learning situation. She continues to explain why impulse control and agility must go hand in paw, providing more games for dealing with poor impulse control on the agility course. So, definitely a must-have for any aficionados of the CU systm (and I really think everyone would benefit from these books, to one degree or another). We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. In chapter three, McDevitt mentions how to prepare for the Control Unleashed programme, and also stresses the importance of getting connected with your dog first, sharing some tips on how to do this. Learn how to turn stress to confidence and distraction to focus using methods that are 110% positive. I was training with a successful, well known, highly recommended handler and on my turn was told "pop her, pop her, pop her.

McDevitt shows us the There’s a Dog in Your Face Game, which can be used as preparation for even closer encounters, as well as explaining how this applies to real life. Voluntary behaviors have always played a role in Control Unleashed® games, and now more than ever Leslie is focused on giving dogs a "voice" through their behavior; a voice that handlers can easily recognize and respond to. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In her third book, Control Unleashed: Reactive to Relaxed , Leslie McDevitt discusses her exciting new additions to the Control Unleashed® training program, as well as new perspectives and revisions of the foundation behaviors and core games.

I'm really happy about it and I can't wait to start reading the book to improve the communication with my reactive crazy agility dog.that after achieving 10 titles, reading a thousand training books, dvds, training under a myriad of trainers etc. but, I think all things requiring tact and judgement (not just dog training) just ARE kind of hard to set down unambiguously in words. They've helped my Patterdale terrier with her focus and self control generally and that's beginning to have affect when we do agility. As with the previous books it does suffer very slightly from the descriptions of procedures being (despite the author's best intentions) a bit opaque and hard to be sure you're following correctly.
