About this deal

Waris Dirie (Somali: Waris Diiriye, Arabic: واريس ديري‎) (born in 1965) is a Somali model, author, actress and human rights activist. It was in McDonalds that her striking beauty was "discovered", leading to a career in modelling and another as an ardent campaigner against female genital mutilation (circumcision).

Rather, it is a striking account of a personal odyssey that began in the Somali desert, where Dirie grew up without shoes, living amid nomadic tribes and tyrannized by patriarchal strictures. Then, aged 12, when her father attempted to arrange a marriage with a 60 year old stranger in exchange for five camels – she took flight. Unfortunately, only 13% of the book covers this information, and Chapter 17 seems to be written with a different voice (perhaps by Cathleen Miller, her co-author? Cathleen Miller circled the globe to interview sources for her latest book, Champion of Choice , the biography of UN leader Nafis Sadik. It is not just a wonderful memoir and a tale of amazing bravery of Waris Dirie, but also an detail account of FGM from the perspective of a victim. An internationally recognized supermodel, Waris Dirie is a United Nations special ambassador who travels the world as an articulate and passionate advocate of human rights. I will never understand why they are putting so much white powder all those female African actresses, politicians, models, TV personalities etc.

Since then, the book has been published in 65 licensed editions, was number 1 on the bestseller lists in many countries (in Germany, for example, the book stayed in the Top Ten list of best-selling books published in the magazine ‘Der Spiegel’ for a total of 120 weeks) and has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. The tale of a courageous woman's struggles to come to terms with her Somali childhood, including her experience of female genital mutilation (FGM). What I also love about Desert Flower is that it deals with FGM without having the issue consume the entire book. But the wounds of the past, and especially the terrible experience of her genital mutilation, follow her in her new life, make her life difficult and prevent her from enjoying some things, though she is surely satisfied with what she has done. Grown up in a slum, she was chosen for the role of Waris as a child in the screening of the international bestseller “Desert Flower”. Tuve todo el tiempo la sensación de estar charlando con una amiga que me estaba contando la historia de su vida.
