About this deal

Also: Revenant Records wishes to apologise to Gary regarding the live version of Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on my Knee. I consider this period to be Beefheart's most underrated, as the incredible "Mirror Man Sessions" plainly proves.

The first CD is a bunch of early blues rock numbers that never made it on an album (and some that did). Each volume of the vinyl edition contains the same libretto printed in different colours – useful for anyone who only wants one or two of the volumes. Then the mixed bag continues, many experimental live recordings, Beefheart messing with a mellotron in Sun Ra-manner – with the result that you realise Sun Ra actually could play the instrument. Given that the early cuts are from 1966, this must have been one of the heavier bands at the time – raw, ramshackle. There is a landfill site sized hole full of Beefheart compilations but this is one of the few that is really lovingly put together and informative. Like Salvador Dali or Rene Magritte, his work was based on startling juxtapositions – a blues riff suddenly shifting into free jazz, three different rhythms playing against one other with vocals bellowing above.

It won't happen (because I'm Gonna Do is two discs) but it would help get his stuff available more widely.
