About this deal

One second I'm reading a funny memoir about an elderly man reminiscing about a time when he seduced a random woman and 'fucked her up the arse' and the next second I'm reading about hierarchical structures and the distribution of power and autonomy in the care system. I expected this to be more anecdotal and instead it felt like I was reading a text book with all the references. She had slight dementia but right to the end she could have a conversation with us unless she had one of the dreaded infections. Pope knows from the inside what life is like in care homes - - he is not knocking the staff (although he gently takes the mick out of one or two colleagues) but the system.

A truly refreshing perspective of work and life in the care industry with an unapologetic sense of humour in its tapestry that only Pope could deliver both sensitively and with the full force of a frying pan. It does for care workers what doctor-turned-comedian Adam Kay’s 2017 memoir This is Going to Hurt did for medics. Having had some experience of visiting people in care homes, little in this book surprises me, and I share with the author much despair about the lack of sensible Government plans to fix the core issues longer term. Publishers Penguin Random House have struck a deal with Expectation, the production company behind shows such as Alma's Not Normal and In My Skin, which will see the book adapted for television. Lonergan publishes his book in a week that charity Care England has alerted the public to the fact that UK care home providers face paying up to four times pre-pandemic levels for their insurance, leaving “many” at risk of going out of business.Unlike the other reviews I actually really liked the memoire style and glad he didn't shy from including his opinions and politics.

Pope should have let someone else narrate, his style isn’t right for audio, it made me cringe at times.Only occasionally funny, and most of the humour was in the footnotes, (and I'm not a fan of footnotes). It is for this reason Lonergan believes ‘twee and saccharine representations of care homes are moderately unethical’ - and why he doesn’t shy away from reporting some unpalatable truths and incidents which are, for want of a better word, ‘yukky’. But his “unsanitised, unsentimentalised” account of the decade he spent “wearing haemorrhoids as cufflinks”, spooning out yoghurt and hearing people’s most intimate (and sometimes final) confessions will leave readers in no doubt of the emotional, physical and financial pressures of the undersung and underpaid job.
