About this deal

I’m writing this on the way home from the DEPLE (Portuguese B1) exam at the embassy in Knightsbridge, feeling slightly frazzled. This expanded version in the Princeton Bollingen series is a revised translation by the same translator, Jackson Mathews, who rendered it in English 20 years earlier and later rightly received the award for translation.

On the night of 4 October 1892, during a heavy storm, Paul Valéry entered an existential crisis, which made a big impact on his writing career. It's like how I knew at 17 that Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville" would be applicable to my love life, but didn't appreciate the tragi-comic implications of that until hearing the album again at 30. I thought I’d jot down what I can remember while I can still remember it because – let’s face it – knowing what I’m like, that won’t be long.Dans La Soirée avec Monsieur Teste, Valéry explique pourquoi, à la recherche du succès littéraire, auquel il aurait pu légitimement aspirer suivant le voeu de ses amis, il a préféré autre chose. Best of all, I resisted my natural inclination to improvise and get myself into convoluted subclauses with no way out.

com provides two different latency measurements for your internet connection: “unloaded” and “loaded” with traffic. Valéry's thought here is difficult and his language often abstract; more likely to satisfy readers of a philosophical and aphoristic bent than those seeking the pleasures of conventional fiction. e., has a truth value of either true or false), then the charge of "bullshit" also requires a firm belief that the conditions upon which the bullshit would be true do not in fact obtain. While described as a novel, it’s a genre-defying montage of fiction, philosophical fragments, letters, epigrams, all written over the period of 50 years. All the same, I found it more than worth the effort and would add that it probably requires re-reading to fully appreciate Valéry’s ideas embodied in his protagonist. The fragmentary and incomplete nature of the materials is sometimes frustrating: one wants to know more than Valéry is prepared to reveal. I had spent the last couple of weeks working on conversation generally, and the last two days cramming intensely for the 1:1 questions, and it paid off in bucket loads. I sometimes amuse myself with an idea of our hearts borrowed from physics: they are made of an enormous injustice and a very small justice intimately combined. It’s the 150th anniversary of Paul Valéry’s birth and, knowing him primarily as a poet (familiar only with a few of his poems in passable-at-best translations), I was surprised at the amount of his prose writings.
