About this deal

I did however find the resolution of that plot line rather unbelievable given the sudden conscience it required one character to develop, and perhaps the actual ending is a bit too perfect.

Her work has appeared on screen, with Pig-Heart Boy, which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, being adapted into a BAFTA-award-winning TV serial. Most of this book is from Toby's persective as you see him stuggling to accept that he's still seen as lower class and has no money for the things he wants (like college) because of it.

Still makes you stop and think about things as the previous books have done without stopping it from being a great read. If you've ever been in love, faced racism, bullying, domestic trouble, fights, then you'll love this book. Moreover – to consider the possibility of a third way – a society run entirely along non-racially defined power structures. In this one we still have that but it's all at the background, giving the story a twist about gangs and drugs.

That book (Checkmate) wraps up the story that began in Noughts and Crosses and this books is just another random character's story. Each teenager harbours a dreadful secret, their reluctant friendship flowering and faltering through shared experience, unwilling criminal involvement and the use of violence to defeat evil. There is also no alternating voices with each chapter, which I thought was a shame as the format had worked so well in the previous books. But in the early stages of 'Double Cross' I began to have a small feeling of doubt, could he have survived, somehow I couldn't completely put it past him.
